First Baptist Church of Tryon

Kay Greene is a native of Spartanburg, SC, but as a PK(Preacher’s Kid) she lived in several different  NC/SC cities in her growing up years.   She graduated from Mars Hill College with a BA degree in both elementary education and Spanish.

In 1973 she came to Tryon to teach 4th grade at Tryon Elementary School, where she was employed until her retirement 29 years later.  On her first Sunday in Tryon, she attended services at First Baptist Church and has been around ever since!  She has taught Sunday School, led GA’s, served on various committees, the Board of Deacons, and has been church clerk for almost 30 years.

Her debut at the church’s piano occurred in the spring of 1975 when she was asked to provide some preservice music for the worship service.  Kay began studying piano at the age of 7 and took lessons for some 10 years.   Although she has no formal music degree, she has always loved to play and began this new task with enthusiasm.  In 1994, she was hired as church pianist.   Four years later she began a new children’s choir program which today includes both an elementary school choir and a preschool choir.  One of the greatest joys of Kay’s life has been working with these children and watching them grow.  She feels extremely blessed to have served God with her wonderful First Baptist family for so many years.
